#WorldMentalHealthDay – A Global Campaign

The WHO launched a global campaign to recognize World Mental Health Day, which is recognized on October 10th each year. Mental health has been a hot topic this year with the COVID-19 pandemic having a major impact on people’s mental health.

World Mental Health Day was created to raise awareness and mobilize resources in support of mental health issues around the world. This year’s theme for World Mental Health Day 2021 is “Mental health care for all: let’s make it a reality” — reinforces the need for greater access to and awareness of mental health care to support the most affected.

Mental health issues have been on a steady incline in recent years, with nearly one billion people having a mental disorder and anyone, anywhere, can be affected. According to WHO, “one in every 100 deaths is by suicide. It is the fourth leading cause of death for young people aged 15-29 years”.

Despite global awareness of mental health throughout the COVID pandemic,  the gap between demand for health services and supply remains significant. Access to health care is creating further challenges to those who are already isolated and stigmatized. With increased job loss, a stressful new daily routine, altered health status, and changes in caregiver roles, mental health conditions are even more widespread. All of these stressors are contributing to worsening mental health outcomes.

Why are we here?

A chronic under-investment over many decades in mental health promotion, prevention and care. According to the WHO data, countries spend only 2% of their national health budgets on mental health, on average. This has changed little in recent years.  Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic has further reduced access to care, by shutting their doors to many walk-in clinics. The need to increase the availability of mental health care is fundamental to addressing the mental health crisis.

Stigma, discrimination and human rights abuses of people with mental health conditions remain widespread.
