Episode 30 – Finding Joy In The Simple Things

How Do We Define Simple Things?

Well, this is a good question and the answer will vary depending upon who you speak with. For me, it’s a matter of creating a space (or simplicity) that allows for contentment with whatever your situation or life. I wrote about creating your own meditation space in a prior podcast episode, and today’s podcast follows a similar train of thought.

Back when I was working 3 jobs, I used to find joy in being busy. And my busy-ness wasn’t always simple either. I was on-call for the emergency department’s sexual assault unit as a nurse examiner, plus I worked 2 other nursing positions.

Today, I find my level of joy comes in the simplicity of my life, and the way I align myself with my people and my environment. And this alignment leads me to connect with myself in more fulfilling ways.

I don’t strive to add more to my agenda. Rather, I align myself with things to do in ‘do time’.

Being able to enjoy the simple things involves a level of contentment that I could only achieve when I was at peace with my own personal circumstances and shortcomings.

If I can help anyone understand the ways to find joy in the simple things, it would be to encourage you to look at the beauty in life. And… to also look at the message that this beauty can provide.

If you can slow down your mind enough to pay attention to the colours around you, you might notice a more mindful approach to creating space (of simplicity) that would allow you to feel content with your situation.

But the thing about me, I DIDN’T WANT TO SLOW DOWN!!

What do I value most in simplicity?

I can follow my own natural body rhythms. I feel healthier and can pay close attention to what might not be working in my business, and in my personal life.

What does this value system say about me?

It reinforces a solid value system that allows me to pass on to my children.

Create Simplicity in Stages

Stage 1: It starts with you alone. You have to decide for yourself what you want to release from your life. It can be an emotion, an old way of being, a habit, or a person.

Stage 2: Once you’ve affirmed the changes you want to make in your personal life, and you’re living a more simplified life overall, I suggest moving onto simplifying in your workplace, or in your business.

Stage 3: When the 2 parts of your life are cleaned-up, you can start to preach to the ones you love the most, your family...but not until you’re really living the value system you want, and feeling grateful for being there.

Ideally, your personal life merges naturally with your family life, if you’re in a marriage or common-law situation. But this might not be the case. Tread lightly with trying to change others opinions, however!

The trick to creating a more simple life, and finding joy in that, is to increase your own personal awareness of what’s not working for you.

Another very grounding practice that can enable you to be more mindful of the present moment is learning the ancient healing art of Vedic meditation. Meditation holds many benefits, as well as common myths.
